Description

Open WebUI is a self-hosted artificial intelligence platform designed to operate entirely offline. Prior to 0.9.6, Open WebUI lets a user who can create, update, or import workspace models store arbitrary meta.knowledge entries on their model without checking whether they own or can read the referenced files. Open WebUI then treats meta.knowledge entries of type file as an authorization source in two places: the built-in view_file tool reads the file's extracted text, and has_access_to_file()'s model branch authorizes the file content and file delete endpoints. A malicious model owner can therefore attach another user's file ID to their model metadata and read or delete that private file. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.9.6.

Description quoted from the NVD record.

Who is affected

Open WebUI is a chat program for using AI language models that your organization runs on its own computers, and it can work entirely offline. This flaw affects versions before 0.9.6. It concerns the workspace models feature, where users can create, update or import their own custom models. Any user allowed to do that can link their model to files belonging to other users, without any check that they own or can see those files, and then read or delete them. This flaw is rated High.

What to do

  1. If someone in your organization installed Open WebUI and looks after it, that person should act on this advisory and check which version is running.
  2. If an IT provider or vendor runs Open WebUI for your organization, send them this advisory and ask when the update will be done.
  3. Update Open WebUI to version 0.9.6 or later. This version fixes the flaw, so users who can create, update or import workspace models can no longer use them to read or delete other people's files.
  4. After the update, check that Open WebUI shows version 0.9.6 or later, so you know the fix is in place.
