Insecure deserialization is a flaw where software takes saved or received data and turns it back into working parts of a program without first checking what is inside. If someone has tampered with that data, the software can end up following the attacker’s instructions or behaving in ways it should not. Picture a mail room that opens every package and does whatever the note inside says, without asking who sent it.
Why it matters
In AI tools, this problem often shows up in model files and data files. Some common file formats can carry hidden code that runs the moment the file is opened, which can lead to remote code execution. That makes downloaded model weights an appealing target for an AI supply chain attack. If your organization uses or hosts AI models, load model and data files only from sources you trust. Ask your vendor or IT helper which file formats they use and whether they choose safer formats that cannot carry code. Also ask how they check a file before they load it.
