Responsible AI

An approach to building and using AI that pays attention to fairness, safety, privacy, transparency and accountability.

Responsible AI is a way of building and using AI that pays attention to fairness, safety, privacy, transparency and accountability. In practice it means clear policies, a person reviewing important decisions, testing for bias and errors, and honesty about when AI is being used. Take a food bank that uses an AI tool to sort applications for help. A responsible approach has a staff member check every application the tool suggests turning down. It also tells applicants that AI helps with the first review.

Why it matters

Many vendors publish responsible AI principles, and they often sound reassuring. What counts is how those principles are put into practice. Before you adopt a tool, ask the vendor how they test for bias and errors, who reviews decisions that affect people, and how users are told when AI is involved. If the answers are vague, treat the principles as marketing until you hear more. Inside your own organization, responsible AI often starts with a written acceptable use policy and grows into broader AI governance. It also connects closely to AI safety.
