Midjourney safety profile

Midjourney is an AI image tool. Creations are public and remixable by default; only Pro and Mega plans offer Stealth mode to limit this.

Data retention
No fixed period is given: personal data is kept as long as needed for the purposes in the privacy policy and to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce agreements. Usage data is generally kept for a shorter time, except when used for security, improving features or where the law requires longer.

Free versus paid
By default, content is publicly viewable and remixable by others. Stealth mode, under which Midjourney makes best efforts not to publish creations, is available only on Pro and Mega plans.

What it does with your data

The most important fact is that Midjourney makes your creations public by default. Its Terms of Service say content is publicly viewable and remixable by others. Only the Pro and Mega plans can switch that off with Stealth mode, and even then Midjourney promises only “best efforts” not to publish.

The pages checked do not say whether Midjourney uses your prompts or images to train its models, on any plan. They also do not describe a way to opt out.

On retention, no fixed period is given. The privacy policy says personal data is kept as long as needed for the purposes it lists, and as needed to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce agreements. Usage data is generally kept for a shorter time, unless it is used for security, to improve features, or the law requires longer.

Deleting is not the same as hiding. A creation you put in the trash may still turn up on the Explore page, in rankings, or through its job ID or link.

Settings to change first

The pages checked do not describe a setting to stop training. The settings they do describe are about keeping work out of public view:

  1. On a Pro or Mega plan, turn on Stealth mode. On the web, use the settings panel or add the --stealth parameter. In Discord, use the /stealth command or the ”🧍‍♂️Public Mode” button in the settings command.
  2. If you upgraded from a cheaper plan, go back and make your earlier public creations private by hand. Upgrading does not do this for you.
  3. Keep work out of public Discord channels and shared spaces. Creations made there stay visible to others even with Stealth mode on.

To delete an account and its data, follow the instructions at the bottom of the account page on the Midjourney website.

Free and paid tiers

The main difference between plans is visibility, not training. On plans without Stealth mode, everything staff create is publicly viewable and others can remix it.

Pro and Mega plans include Stealth mode. Users who got Stealth through one of those subscriptions, or through the earlier add-on, get Midjourney’s agreement to make best efforts not to publish what they create while it is on.

A few rules apply across plans:

  • Creations in public Discord channels or shared spaces stay visible on every plan.
  • Content you made private stays private if you later cancel or downgrade.
  • After upgrading, earlier public creations must be made private manually.

The pages checked do not say whether training or retention differs by plan.

Admin controls

The vendor pages checked do not describe any admin controls. They say nothing about single sign-on, managing users, or setting data rules for a whole organization. That means each staff member controls their own account and their own Stealth setting. You have no documented way to enforce it centrally.

The pages checked also do not name any certifications or audit reports, such as a security audit you could show a board or funder. If your organization needs that kind of assurance, ask Midjourney directly and get the answer in writing.

Using it with donor and client data

Treat Midjourney as a public space. Anything staff type into a prompt or upload could end up visible to others, especially on plans without Stealth mode.

If you allow it at all, use a Pro or Mega plan with Stealth mode turned on for every account. Keep work out of public Discord channels.

Never put these into a prompt or upload:

  • Donor names, especially with gift amounts
  • Client case notes or photos of clients
  • Health, payment or address details
  • Internal documents or images that identify people

Before anyone uses it near donor or client work, ask Midjourney in writing:

  • Do you train on our prompts and images, and can we opt out?
  • How long do you keep our content after we delete it?
  • Do you offer any organization admin controls?
  • Which certifications or audits can you share?

The pages checked leave all four unanswered.

Questions people ask

Can other people see what our staff create?

Yes, by default. Content is publicly viewable and remixable unless you are on a Pro or Mega plan with Stealth mode on. Work made in public Discord channels stays visible regardless.

If we delete an image, is it gone?

Not necessarily. Trashed creations may still appear on the Explore page, in rankings, or through a job ID or link. Making something private is a separate step from trashing it.

Where is our data stored?

Midjourney processes personal data at its operating offices and wherever the parties involved are located, which can be outside your country. The pages checked do not offer a choice of region.
